ELBAITE TOURMALINE, variety WATERMELON. Single crystal with green color on the ends and pink in the middle. One end is terminated, with minor damage. Luster is vitreous. The crystal is 1.4 inches in length. Pictures show with and without a light on the side to illustrate the translucency. From the famous Himalaya Mine in California.

ELBAITE is a member of the Tourmaline group. It is a sodium, lithium, aluminum, boro-silicate mineral. WATERMELON is the variety of Elbaite with green ends and red/pink middle. The crystal system is Trigonal. Hardness is 7 – 7.5 on the Mohs scale.Â

Himalaya mine occurs in a miarolitic LCT-type granitic pegmatite, highly boron-enriched, and located in north-central San Diego Co., California, USA. First discovered in 1898, the Himalaya mine was one of the largest producers of gem and specimen-grade tourmaline in North America throughout much of the 20th century.
