This piece is from the collection of Roger Maynard. Roger is a friend and was a long-time geologist with the US Geological Survey in New Mexico.

ELBAITE is a member of the Tourmaline group. It is a sodium, lithium, aluminum, boro-silicate mineral. WATERMELON is the variety of Elbaite with green ends and red/pink middle. The crystal system is Trigonal. Hardness is 7 – 7.5 on the Mohs scale.

Himalaya mine occurs in a miarolitic LCT-type granitic pegmatite, highly boron-enriched, and located in north-central San Diego Co., California, USA. First discovered in 1898, the Himalaya mine was one of the largest producers of gem and specimen-grade tourmaline in North America throughout much of the 20th century.
